Making time to hit the gym after a full workday is sometimes out of the question, which is why it's equally efficient to utilize the time you spend at work to squeeze in exercise. Even those ordinary tasks at home that you may not even realize are burning calories, like cooking, are an easy way to shed away what you'd normally do at the gym. Learn more about some of our tips and tricks that will easily eliminate calories throughout your day!

1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator

We know it’s tempting to resort to what’s easiest, but opting for the stairs instead of the elevator is a great way to boost that ole’ heart rate. Consider it a way to prep and energize you for the day!

2. Lower the Thermostat

We’re not suggesting you transform your desk into an igloo to shed some extra pounds, but keeping the temperature just a bit lower than what feels comfortable is one way that your body burns more calories to stay warm.

3. Purchase small desk drawer equipment

Invest in easily-storable equipment like resistance bands or a jump rope that you can use during breaks in your office. Interchangeable weights also allow you to select the amount you’re lifting with the push of a button, which are way handier than freakishly storing an entire dumbbell collection in your cubicle.

4. Invest in a pedometer and take a walk

This is probably the most obvious way to burn extra calories throughout the day, but it never hurts to have a reminder. The last 5 minutes of every hour, take a lap around the office or after work, take the dog for a long walk or head to the mall. Having that pedometer will help you to meet your step goals each day.

5. Sit on an exercise ball instead of an office chair

Some days, the best part of your job may only be the fact that your comfy office chair swivels. No matter the lumbar support, because swapping the chair out for a fitness ball will build up your core strength to reduce any back pain.

6. Half lunch, half yoga

One day out of the week, use only half of your lunch hour to eat a packed lunch and the other half hour to do a yoga video on your laptop. You’ll feel refreshed afterwards and will power through that slump.

7. Cooking

It seems crazy, but think about the energy it takes to push that grocery cart, the hustle in the kitchen of the actual cooking process and then doing the dishes afterwards. This everyday task burns more than you’d think!

8. Yard work

Depending on the season, you may be out there gardening, shoveling snow or raking leaves. Either way, know that these daily jobs are also helping you burn the extra calories.

9. Cleaning

Dusting off that Swiffer Sweeper (to then use it to rid of even more dust) is an effective way to get you off your feet during the workday. Tidying items, running a vacuum or washing windows will also do the trick.

10. Try a standing office setup

In recent years, some modern offices have experimented with standing desks. Simply being on your feet and moving around is a much better alternative than sitting stationary all day.

11. Park far away

There’s no copping out of this easy calorie-busting trick if you ever want to get to work on time or get home at the end of the day!

12. Drink water, green tea and coffee

Sometimes people tend to snack because they think they feel hungry, but really they could just be dehydrated. Filling up with fluids like water, green tea and coffee throughout the day are all known to boost metabolism and ward off extra calories.

13. Fidget

According to a study at the Mayo Clinic, fidgeting (such as tapping your feet, pacing or wiggling in your seat) could burn up to 350 more calories per day than someone who sits still all day.

14. Chew gum

Doing so doesn’t quite burn 100 calories, but you may feel less of a need to mindlessly snack when you’re chomping on minty gum.

15. Laugh

Who doesn’t like a good laugh, anyway? Chatting and giggling with coworkers is a healthy way to take a break from computer or phone screens and get to know the people you interact with on a day to day basis.
