By now you may have heard of 22-year-old Jon Meis. He is the Seattle Pacific University student that tackled Aaron Ybarra when he open fired at the school. He also pepper sprayed the gunmen and along with other students, helped restrain him until the police could arrive.
It turns out that the shooting occurred just two weeks shy of Meis’ wedding, which is why he’s suddenly found that every item on his and his fiancé’s wedding registry has been purchased. People who wanted to thank him shared the link online and people quickly stepped up to show their thanks.
Afterwards Jessamyn McIntyre started a crowdfunding campaign
for the couple’s honeymoon as another way for people to thank him. McIntyre explained why she started the campaign on Twitter:
The campaign was an incredible success, raising its goal of $5,000 in a few hours. Since the campaign began on June 6 it has raised over $50,000 dollars. Yesterday, the fundraiser released an update to inform people that the donations have been turned off and that Meis is urging people to instead donate to the victims at Seattle Pacific University.
Meis released a statement where he thanked all those who have donated money or gifts to him, saying, “I am overwhelmed with the incredible generosity that has been showered upon me. It has been deeply touching to read the comments online and realize that my actions have had such a strikingly widespread effect.”
