Have Wine Glasses Gotten Too Big? Smaller Glasses = Less Wine?

The British government wants to reduce binge drinking – by making restaurants use smaller wine glasses. Public Health England wants to reduce the maximum size of restaurant wine glasses to a capacity of 250 milliliters (8.45 ounces), which is roughly a third of a bottle of wine -- if the glass is filled to the top. Apparently today, 300 milliliter and 370 milliliter wine glasses are common, with some glasses as large as 450 milliliters. According to research, the size of wine glasses has doubled since the 1990s, and are seven times larger than they were in the early 18th century. (24/7 Wall St.)

  • Will a smaller glass really curb drinking – or just make you fill the glass more often?
