Over 160 years ago, the first telegram was sent.  Telegrams announced all sorts of things when they arrived: congratulations, condolences, death announcements, winning of a prize.

Sometimes a telegram announced a sigh of relief.  The telegram above announces the safety of someone in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii earlier in the month.

Usually instead of punctuation at the end of a sentence, the sentence would end with the word 'STOP'.

The state-run telegram service in India, the last major telegram service will end on July 14th.

Have you ever sent or received a telegram?
