This is interesting and though I'm not a parent- knowing how I was a kid- I think the use of this word would've worked on me.  It's the idea that you're contributing and not just following orders- at least that's how I interpreted it.

Of course- it's not a magic solution- but it may be worth a try!

The study, conducted jointly by researchers at the University of California, San Diego; the University of Washington; and Stanford University, included about 150 children aged 3 to 6.
