Intelligent people are more likely to trust.  

According to an article from "Researchers at Oxford University analyzed data from America's GSS Survey (or General Social Survey), a census that has been analyzing America's population since 1978. The researchers concluded, among other findings, that "Intelligence is shown to be linked with trusting others, even after taking into account factors like marital status, education and income."

The article also states...

"This finding supports what other researchers have argued, namely that being a good judge of character is a distinct part of human intelligence which evolved through natural selection."
