I always thought about this while ice fishing, what if a big chunk of ice just broke off and there I am floating in the middle of a lake on a big ice chunk.
This past Saturday, twenty-seven people ice-fishing in the Bay of Green Bay needed rescuing, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. A huge chunk of ice broke from the shore. It floated away with 27 stranded people with the ice “deteriorating rapidly.” The U.S. Coast Guard motored one-mile into the Bay to reach the ice float. The last ones to be rescued waited nearly two hours as the ice broke into smaller pieces.
The Brown County Sheriff's Office posted about it on their Facebook which you can see the post below. All 27 were safely returned to shore. The department reminded Wisconsinites to “always keep a cellphone with them when standing or traveling on ice.”
