Court orders "Bde Maka Ska" to be renamed Lake Calhoun again

Early in 2018 the popular Minneapolis lake formerly named "Lake Calhoun" was renamed "Bde Maka Ska".

Originally named after John C. Calhoun, a South Carolina senator and United States Vice President who used to speak on "the positive good" of slavery and authored the Indian Removal Act. Because of these negative ties, Tom Landwehr, the former DNR commissioner pushed to have the lake renamed Bde Maka Ska, which means "White Earth Lake" in Dakota.

Monday, a court of appeal ruling has determined that Landwehr did not have the power to change the name of the lake and it will once again be named Lake Calhoun.

A three judge panel in Minneapolis ruled unanimously that the move to rename the lake was not Landwehr's to make and that only the Minnesota Legislature can change the name of the lake.

It has yet to be seen if the legislature will pursue a switch back to Bde Maka Ska.
