Summer Is Kidney Stone Season...Who Knew?

Summer isn't just beach and pool season, it's also kidney stone season.

Researchers warn that one-in-10 Americans will develop a kidney stone this summer, due to not being sufficiently hydrated. Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form in the kidneys and can cause an obstruction that could be very painful. People are at higher risk of getting them in the summer when it's hot and they don't drink enough.

Experts say the beginning of summer, like the month of June, is an especially common time to develop kidney stones because our bodies haven't quite adapted to the warmer weather yet.

The best way to avoid kidney stones is to drink plenty of water, especially with citrus, and avoid drinking too much coffee and alcohol.
