It's been 7 years since my Dad (Phillip) lost his battle with liver cancer. I can tell you everything that happened that day like it was yesterday. My Dad was scheduled to go to hospice but there were no rooms available so he was put in a hospital room and we just had to wait until the next day. My Mom and I decided it was best if we spent the night at the hospital with him because we didn't want him to be alone, in case something happened. It was a good thing we did, because early that morning on February 27, 2013, he started thrashing and his breaths started getting shorter and shorter. I can still remember color of the room, looking at the time on the clock, the feeling of holding his hand and his grip was strong and held is hand until his grip got weaker, his breaths got shorter, and tears started falling down my face. I was losing the man who took me to numerous baseball practices, joked that he was only coming to my game if I took the bat off my shoulder and swung, and most importantly the man who told me to follow my dreams no matter what anyone says.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him, and the one song that has made me stop what I was doing and listen and remember that day the most is Luke Combs' "Even Though I'm Leaving."
